Great for dipping carrot sticks in and a good way to ‘hide’ aubergine!
How to make your own nut and seed milks
Plant based milks are a staple for anyone who is trying to avoid or cut down on dairy, however, besides being quite pricey for daily use, many of the store bought varieties contain a whole host of ingredients and only a small percentage of actual nuts or seeds! I started making my own after realising that my almond milk had less than one percent actual almonds in the ingredients!
Chocolate and Greens Sunflower Seed Milk (vegan, gluten free, grain free, raw, toddler approved)
At one point my toddler was going through a phase where all the foods she loved before, like avocadoes, cucumbers, spinach etc. were suddenly no longer fashionable! As a result I had to come up with some creative ways to get her to eat a variety of foods, this sunflower seed milk is a ‘more Mommy more’ kind of recipe!
Budget Green Pesto (vegan, gluten free, grain free)
Every now and then my husband spends almost 2 hours, opening pine nuts from the pine cones off the pine tree in our back yard, for all this effort he gets just under 1/2 a cup of pine kernels, which we then use to make a wonderful pesto. However, not everyone has a pine tree in their back yard and I for one am not about to pay a kings ransom each time I want some pesto, so here is my weeknight budget version!
Rainbow Fries (chips) (vegan, gluten free, grain free, toddler approved)
An ever so slightly healthier version of an old classic, my daughter loves these and for me they are a great PMS ‘just need something comforting’ go-to.
Green Tea and Mint Smoothie (vegan, gluten free, grain free, raw)
I never used to be a big fan of green tea, then I reached 35 and now it is a staple in my cupboard! You make of that what you will:-)!
This smoothie is refreshing, energizing and full of goodness..
How to grow your own sunflower greens
I’ve always loved sprouts and use a selection of them in my salads and other dishes, they are absolute nutritional powerhouses and so easy to grow oneself! My favourite has to be sunflower sprouts, also known as sunflower greens and I often use these instead of lettuce in a salad, as well as using them as the green part of a green smoothie.
Warm quinoa and pineapple breakfast with ginger (vegan, gluten free, grain free, oil free)
Full of fibre and digestive enzymes, this is a dream for the digestive system. It is grain and gluten free and naturally sweetened with the pineapple. A great energy breakfast and perfect for colder mornings!
Pea and lettuce soup (vegan, gluten free, grain free)
A truly elegant soup! One of my Mom’s winning recipes, I adapt it according to the greens in my cupboard and it always turns out well! It is super easy to make and really quick also, so a great reason to always keep frozen peas, coconut milk and lettuce to hand!
Is acidity sabotaging your health?
If your experience is anything like mine, then well-meaning friends are often telling you to make sure you don’t eat too many acidic foods, as according to them, these are the main cause of afflictions such as gout and heartburn. Truthfully, according to Dr Wolfgang R Auer, having too much acid in ones blood (acidosis), definitely does damage ones health as well as hampering the effectiveness of many naturopathic treatments and mainstream medications.
